Welcome to AEW's Fight For the Fallen special episode of Collision on August 19 in Lexington, Kentucky.

As AEW prepares for All In on August 27 and All Out on September 3, management has been in full planning mode trying to make sure both shows have a card worth buying.

However, AEW still wants its weekly shows to be must-see TV, so we got a couple of fun matches this week like Dalton Castle vs. Jay White, and Darby Allin vs. Christian Cage.

We also heard from FTR, Miro and Ricky Starks regarding their various storylines and upcoming matches.

Let's take a look at what happened on Saturday's episode of Collision.

Jay White vs. Dalton Castle

Samoa Joe came out to open the show and was attacked by a man in a golden jumpsuit. He hit Joe with a running knee followed by the GTS before unmasking himself to reveal CM Punk. He told Joe he accepts his challenge before leaving.

The first match of the night was White vs. Castle. The rest of Bullet Club Gold and The Boys were at ringside to support their respective leaders.

Castle had the size and power advantage but that didn't stop Switchblade from taking control and throwing him out of the ring early in the match. Castle quickly recovered and used his amateur wrestling skills to get the upper hand for a bit.

With so many people at ringside, it was very unlikely that we would get through this match without some kind of interference. Thankfully, the majority of the match was just White and Castle showing off their wrestling ability while everyone else cheered them on.

Juice Robinson continuing to be a menace#AEWCollision pic.twitter.com/EtHr8O4DCn

This was a really entertaining match for multiple reasons. Not only did we get to see some solid in-ring technique from both men, but there were some good comedy spots that didn't make the match seem any less serious. White scored the win, but Castle came away from this looking good.

    Winner: Jay White

    Grade: B+

    Notable Moments and Observations

    • You could tell it was Punk in the outfit before he even did anything.
    • Austin Gunn dancing with the cardboard cutout of White during Castle's entrance was hilarious.
    • The spot when Castle missed a running knee and went right over the top rope looked great.
    • Castle has a nice variety of suplexes. Her German suplex was a thing of beauty. He had such a high bridge when he landed.

Bullet Club Gold vs. Iron Savages

2 of 6

After White's victory, The Gunns and Robinson asked for a trios match. The Iron Savages came out to answer the challenge.

Austin ended up taking a lot of damage from the three powerhouses before BCG was able to take control.

This could have been a squash match to make Bullet Club Gold look dangerous, but The Iron Savages getting in some offense helped make this more competitive than expected.

Robinson got the win for his team to finish up a fast-paced trios bout that really seemed to get the crowd invested.

    Winners: Bullet Club Gold

    Grade: B-

    Notable Moments and Observations

    • Tony Schiavone keeping a straight face while he was interviewing BCG was impressive.
    • Bear Boulder is so much fun to watch when he gets going. He's a big guy who moves like he is 50 pounds lighter than he is.
    • The Gunns failing to hit their finisher on Bear because he was too big was a great moment. The crowd burst into laughter.

Big Bill vs. Derek Neal, Willow Nightingale vs. Diamante

    Collision. AEW

Ricky Starks got around his four-week suspension by serving as the manager for Big Bill in a match against a local competitor named Derek Neal. Obviously, Bill won quickly and easily.

    Winner: Big Bill

    Grade: Incomplete

The next matchup saw Willow take on Diamante. The former NJPW Strong women's champion had a significant power advantage, so she was able to throw her opponent around with minimal effort.

But Diamante is no slouch. Once she saw an opening, she took Nightingale down and began pounding on her with lefts and rights.

Mercedes Martinez came down to get a better view from ringside and provided Diamante with a distraction. Willow was able to rebound and when we returned from the break and began to build some momentum.

Kris Statlander took out Martinez at ringside, allowing Willow to hit a Pounce before bringing her opponent back in the ring so she could hit a powerbomb for the win. This kept the storyline moving and delivered a decent match in the process.

    Winner: Willow Nightingale

    Grade: B

    Notable Moments and Observations

    • Starks was whipping Neal with the belt in the butt, not across the back. Whether that is better or not is something only Neal can answer.
    • The sound Willow made when her knee got clipped was so convincing.
    • There was an LA Knight fan in the crowd holding up a "YEAH" sign.
    • The way the back of Willow's head hit the top turnbuckle when she was tripped looked rough. Blind bumps like that are always so risky.

Powerhouse Hobbs vs. Kevin Ku

4 of 6

    Collision.
    Collision.AEW

Powerhouse Hobbs had a match on this week's show against a talent by the name of Kevin Ku. Hobbs taunted Miro by talking to him through the camera as he beat down his opponent in the corner. Hobbs won but continued to attack his opponent by using Miro's submission.

Miro appeared on the big screen and spoke to Hobbs to set up an eventual match. Miro vs. Hobbs is going to be great, but they didn't need another squash match on this show to make it happen.

    Winner: Powerhouse Hobbs

    Grade: Incomplete

    Notable Moments and Observations

    • Toni Storm gave a great interview backstage before this match.
    • Ku had some cool tattoos with a lot of color.

Darby Allin vs. Christian Cage

5 of 6

    Collision.
    Collision.AEW

Jim Ross joined the commentary team for the main event between Allin and Cage. Luchasaurus was there but Christian still had the TNT title as if he was the champion.

This bout was given more than 20 minutes, so they were pacing themselves and making sure to sell every big spot while including little story beats along the way.

Cage still works at a high level despite not being as active as he once was, so he was able to keep up with the quicker Allin.

They displayed an impressive level of chemistry for two guys with minimal experience working together. Castle vs. White was good, but this match edged it out slightly to be the best performance of the night.

After several risky spots and close two-counts kept us guessing, Allin was able to get the win by using all of his weight to keep Christian down for the pin.

    Winner: Darby Allin

    Grade: A-

    Notable Moments and Observations

    • Whoever makes Luchasaurus's gear does a great job.
    • Cage embracing the sleeveless turtleneck for his gear will never stop being funny.
    • Christian hit a couple of chops at ringside that looked and sounded stiff. You could see the crowd near them flinching.
    • The way Allin throws his whole body at his opponents looks great because it never looks like he is holding back.

The Final Word

6 of 6

This week's Collision had a lot to like, but it also had some filler that felt totally unnecessary to the overall show.

Castle and White opened the show with a great match, and the closer between Cage and Allin got the crowd on its feet and chanting "This is awesome."

The two squash matches we saw could have been combined to give someone one decent match, but AEW has been using squashes for a long time, so they just come with the territory at this point.

The fact that AEW is building two PPVs at once and actually has fans excited for both has been impressive to watch, especially since the weekly shows have still been good, too.

AEW had a bit of a slump earlier this year but it seems to be back on the right track.
